Record sales through online gambling in 2021 for Entain

Last Thursday, the Entain company published its annual report for the past year 2021. The gambling group, which operates Bwin and Ladbrokes, therefore recorded seven percent growth last year.

Online sector compensates for terrestrial sector

The British gambling company Entain runs around 2,700 betting agencies in Great Britain. According to the annual report, the group was only able to take a total of 791 million GBP in 2021-the equivalent of around 953 million euros-only from the land-based betting sector. This sum represents a corona-related decline of seven percent. However, this could be compensated for by the increase in the online sector. As a whole, Entain lists a growth of seven percent.

The increase can mainly be attributed to the online industry. In the same year, revenue in this sector rose by 12.3% to a total of 3.01 billion GBP – the equivalent of around 3.62 billion euros. The online gambling and the online sports betting offers from Entain were able to increase an increase in the ninth year in a row. In addition, the growth was always double -digit within this period. This is thanks to product investments and also targeted advertising campaigns. For example, Entain rely on advertisements for football fans. In addition, the group sponsored the TV show First Dates. Together with the new website for Ladbrokes, Entains benefited British online sector.

But not only the online industry gave reason to be happy. The terrestrial betting shops could also be happy. Because the Corona restrictions have been loosened further, the betting shops can receive customers again. So you were welcomed to Entain’s return to the land -based locations. According to the “Financial Times”, the main street almost has the same level of sales as before Corona. Despite continued restrictions up to ten percent, the same level as in 2019 was reached, i.e. 90 percent the same level as three years ago. Although the gambling group closes around two to three percent of the land-based betting agencies every year, Andersen believes “in the strength of terrestrial business”.

It is not yet possible to say whether all customers of the terrestrial sector permanently switch to online offers. It was too early for this, at least Entain CEO Andersen. This means that an exact prediction regarding the development of the British betting industry is not yet possible.

Gambling regulations planned for May

Possibly new regulations could threaten the company to the company. But the competition would not be different. The regulations are renewed in some countries and the providers in the European markets are sometimes confronted with strict regulations. The gambling laws are also planned in Great Britain, and in just under two months. In May this year, operational limits or credit tests – as they already exist in USA – to be decided.

Due to the strict regulations in Europe, it is not surprising that gambling companies are focusing rapidly growing new markets such as Latin America and the USA. The rapidly growing and growing markets in Europe should then balance themselves.
